How To Force Stop A Service

Have you ever wanted to force stop a service that is not responding or wont stop/restart on a Windows box?

Here is e a quick and easy guide on how to force stop a service that should take about a minute or less.

  1. Click the Start menu
  2. Click Run or in the search bar type services.msc
  3. Press Enter
  4. Look for the service, right click and select Properties and identify service name
  5. Once found, open an elevated command prompt. Type sc queryex [servicename].
  6. Press Enter
  7. Identify the PID
  8. In the same command prompt type taskkill /pid [pid number] /f
  9. Press Enter
  10. Go to services and confirm service has stopped
